KMC Sets Up Heatstroke Relief Centers At 13 Hospitals

KMC has setup Heatstroke Centers at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases, Sarfaraz Rafiqui Shaheed Hospital, Sobhraj Maternity Hospital, Landhi Medical Centre, Spencer Eye Hospital, Landhi Cardiac Centre, Shah Faisal Cardiac Centre, Homeopathic Hospital Nazimabad, Leprosy Hospital Manghopir and a few others.

Senior Director, Medical & Health Services, KMC, Dr. Birbal Genani, stated that, “Heatstroke Relief Centers have been established in 13 major hospitals of KMC wherein ORS, drips, medicines and staff is posted to provide first aid care to
patients affected by scorching heat.”

He further added that these steps were taken after the apparent increase in temperature level in the city of Karachi. He has advised all the citizens to adopt preventive measures including, an increase in water consumption to stay hydrated, wear light colored clothing and avoid unnecessary sun exposure.

Tuberculosis: Leading Cause Of Death, Worldwide

KARACHI– Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT), organized an awareness program on ‘Tuberculosis’ (TB). The aim of this program was to create awareness amongst masses regarding the contiguous debilitating disease. Free checkups were also conducted at medical camps, held at SIUT centers.

Tuberculosis is considered as one of the top 10 causes of death worldwide.

In 2016, an estimated number of 10.4 million new cases were reported globally, with a mortality of 1.7 million. In Pakistan, during the year of 2016, an estimated number of 518,000 patients were diagnosed with TB, with an incidence of 268/100,000 population.

On this occasion, the SIUT chalked out an elaborate plan where TB experts of SIUT informed the visitors that Pakistan is included amongst seven countries accounted for 64% of all new cases in the global perspective. Furthermore, Pakistan
is considered a high burden country for Multi-drug resistant TB.

While conducting the educational lecture about this disease, the experts pointed out that Tuberculosis is an airborne
disease, and can be caught by breathing in the air that an infected person has contaminated, through breathing and, or
coughing. Symptoms include, lasting cough, fatigue, coughing up blood, chest pain, sweating at night, fever, loss of appetite, and weight loss. It can affect ANY organ of the body. It is extremely important to raise awareness regarding the signs & symptoms, spread, treatment modalities of this disease; and most importantly to highlight its preventive measures.

The program was organized under the auspices of Department of Infectious Diseases, SIUT, which focused on the communities where active cases were detected. The program was held at three centers of SIUT including Primary
Healthcare Center Kathore, Malir and SIUT Chalbani Medical Center of Sukkur, respectively.

The constituents of this program were, the availability of free medical checkups & consultations, dietary/nutritional advices, distribution of educational literature on TB, viewing of disease educational videos, exhibition of informative posters and banners, alongside interactive sessions between SIUT medical staff members with the audience.

The SIUT experts included Infectious diseases specialists Dr. Asma Nasim, Dr. Sunil Dodani and Dr. Zaheer-uddin Baber,
Pulmonologist Dr. Masroor Afridi, Dietician, Ms. Kehkashan and other related medical staff.

A large number of people from all walks of life attended the event and highly benefitted from it.

Medical Treatment In Future Will Be Different, Says Expert

KARACHI- Recent discoveries as an outcome of successful research in the world of bio-medical sciences will soon provide an exciting time for the human society by bringing permanent cure from various ailments. This was stated by Prof Magdi Mohammad Yaqub the visiting Professor of Nephrology from William Harvey Research Institute of London during a lecture on “Heart Diseases in Kidney Failure” which he delivered at Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT). Giving the details he identified many chronic diseases which are going to be benefited by treatment including treatment of any kidney failure and general disorders like the ailment of thalassemia. A system of targeted delivery of medicines to a specific part of human body is in process of development he disclosed. The system will be innovative and revolutionary commented Prof Yaqub.
The visiting professor while highlighting successful results obtained from research said soon it would be possible to use stem cell technology to repair damaged organs. Giving details of more positive results obtained, he said another leap forward is in the ailment of Thalassemia which is common in children with no cure can but now be treated by single gene replacement technology. Prof Yaqub said the results obtained in research would bear fruit in next five to ten years. Earlier, the lecture was
dedicated to the memory of Professor Kirpal Singh Chugh known as the father of Nephrology in the subcontinent who passed away in Chandigarh (India) recently. Prof Chugh was considered amongst 50 icons of nephrology in the world. He was a friend of SIUT and had made six visits to the Institute in all major conferences since 1990.
